Ready stepped ashore in Charlottetown
to assume the duties of Lieutenant-
Governor from the recently departed
Charles Douglas Smith. He found Charlottetown
a presentable little town, with
wide streets, a scattering of unpretentious
houses, and a few public buildings
centred around a large square. The
harvest was in, and farmers and
townsfolk flocked to the market house.
Some farmers came on foot, laden with
their produce, others arrived in carts
which bumped over the rutted streets,
scattering noisy geese along the way.
Winter was approaching, and everyone
was busy preparing for long months of
