landmark ahead as it emerges from the
similarly shaped trees of the spruce
woods and takes on an identity of its
own. Dominating the flat landscape, a
slender grey finger pointing heavenward
yet marking the earthly village of
Tignish, the steeple of the Church of St.
Simon and St. Jude, like the spires of
Chartres, can be seen from a great
distance. It performs the dual function of
guiding visitors (and mariners at sea) to
