Description
Originally from the tiny village of l’Étang-des-Clous (Nail Pond), Prince Edward Island, Pierre Bernard and his nephew Joseph Bernard were a step ahead of many adventurers who explored Canada’s Arctic territories. At the start of the 20th century, these two Acadians engaged in the first commercial activity in the Inuit regions of the Arctic, which had been untapped until that time. In doing so, they helped to establish Canadian sovereignty in this western part of the Arctic, and today, they can be recognized as figures of national historic importance.
