The discovery of gold in California captured public attention around much of the world. In the months and years after news of the discovery at Sutter’s Mill in January 1848, individuals and newly formed associations of fortune hunters began to make their way to California from elsewhere in the Americas, Europe and Asia. In the fall of 1848, Prince Edward Island newspapers began to publish reports of the California gold rush.
