Description
Early in the 20th century, there was a fundamental change in how Prince Edward Island presented itself to others. Up until the end of the Victorian era the medium for promotion had been overwhelmingly the travel writer’s account, whether journalistic or promotional. Although there had been some illustrative material in tourism articles, for the most part the text was the thing. However, with the improvement in and popularization of photography another opportunity presented itself and was rapidly adopted all across Canada. Although the shift to from words to images was an international trend, its impact can be seen in the specific instance of Prince Edward Island through the work of one individual – amateur photographer William Steele Louson.
