On 10 August 1883, BenjaminHimmelman, managing owner ofthe 45-ton, two-masted schooner Welcome,watched his vessel leave the portof Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, for the fishinggrounds off Prince Edward Island.On board were his three sons — Albert(the skipper), Eli, and young George —and two of his nephews: HenryHimmelman, a son of his brother, Henry;and James Stannage Himmelman, son ofhis brother, Jacob. There were five othersin the 10-man crew, all good seamenoff on a routine fishing trip in mid-summerin a sturdy vessel built seven yearsearlier in nearby LaHavre.
