Description
In May 1971, after having completedmy first year at the Universite deMoncton, I came back to Abram'sVillage for the summer. I returnedhome with a project in mind that haddeveloped during the year from readingsand contacts I had made: I wantedto search for and record Acadian folksongs.I knew very little about the folksongtradition in my own community, but I felt sure that I would find at leastsome remnants of the old Frenchsongs.I began my field research by visitinga few neighbours. To my greatastonishment, I had stumbled on a veritablegold mine. That project turnedout to be the starting point of a longand fascinating voyage of discoverythat led me to many Acadian traditionalsingers across the Island. Over thepast 20 years, I have been able torecord hundreds of their songs.
