In 1893, the Prince Edward Island Legislature embarkedon a unique experiment. After several years of negotiation,the members of the House of Assembly and LegislativeCouncil reached agreement on combining both bodies, thustransforming the Island's two-chamber parliament into a onechamberLegislative Assembly.The Prince Edward Island Legislature sat for the first timein 1773. The lower chamber, or House of Assembly, was anelected body. Members of the upper chamber, or LegislativeCouncil, were appointed. The Island Legislature holds the distinctionof being the second-oldest parliament in Canada. Onlythe Nova Scotia Legislature, which first sat in 1758, is older.
