Summerside was like many small North Americantowns in the early years of the 20th century. It had apark; hospital, post office, radio station, skating rink andtown hall scattered amongst its schools, banks, stores andhouses. At the centre of the community was its movietheatre, started in 1911 by J.J. Gaudet. He was describedas a man of fine personal appearance, tall with a commandingpresence and genial nature. He and his wifeMary at one point ran two restaurants, a theatre, a bowlingalley, dance hall and pool room. He was Summerside;s"Entertainment King." Possibly the best-known man intown, he was known by all simply as Joe "Bunn."
