07 The search for a provincial museum p 31-38
Collection Search
Description
The battle to preserve this Island’s heritage began over 150 years ago. As far back as the 1840s, the Charlottetown Mechanics’ Institute began a collection, mostly natural history specimens, it hoped would one day become part of a museum. It is not known what happened to this material after the Mechanics faded away in the 1850s, but this was probably the collection featured for some years on the landing of the main staircase at Province House. The Mechanics used to meet in the old Plaw Legislature/Court House building on the north west corner of Queens Square, so the museum roots of the area around the Square can be said to run very deep.
