In the early hours of 16 June 1862,two divisions of Union soldiers,numbering over 3,500 men, preparedto capture a small Confederate earthworkon James Island near the city ofCharleston. The Battle of Secessionville,the most important Civil Warengagement in South Carolina, endedas a strategic and symbolic victory forthe rebellious Confederacy. Amongthe dozens of Union dead was a 30-year-old Prince Edward Islander, Sgt.John J. McDonald, Company K, 28thMassachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
