In our rush to study neglectedminorities, we too often succumb, paradoxically, to the old idea thatCanada is in some sense an "English"country, or that Canada has been theproduct of two founding peoples,English and French. Either way, theEnglish are seldom seen as "ethnic" or"immigrant." The English in an importantsense dominate our early history.Though many colonial officials wereIrish or Scots by birth, they followedorders emanating from London, andEnglish economic and political dominancefacilitated the hegemony of theEnglish language, both within theBritish Isles and abroad.
