In the early morning of 8 November1945, Bernard Cheverie went duckhunting to South Lake near the easterntip of Prince Edward Island.Instead of wildfowl, he spotted a handfulof men moving across the slopingdunes above the beach. As heapproached them, he was astoundedto see a massive ship on the shore!Mr. Cheverie was the first local personto see the wreck of HMCSAssiniboine. Cheverie has always livednear the water, and fished for manyyears, but he cannot recall ever beingmore surprised then he was thatNovember morning when he cameupon the 329-foot Assiniboine "parked"on the beach. Nature had depositedone of Canada's most famous warshipssquarely into the local history of easternKings County.
