Description
Dr. John Mackieson (October 16th 1795 – August 27th 1885) was born in Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1815. He practiced medicine in Liverpool before immigrating to PEI in 1821. He married Matilda Bracken in 1830 and they had 4 children together. Mackieson practiced medicine extensively in Charlottetown. He was surgeon general of the militia, health officer for the port of Charlottetown and medical superintendent of the Charlottetown lunatic asylum. He kept extensive notes throughout his life and a book, “Island Doctor: John Mackieson and Medicine in Nineteenth-Century Prince Edward Island” by Daniel Shephard chronicles his life as a doctor on PEI.
John Mackieson: Born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, October 16th, 1795, and had emigrated to Prince Edward Island November 15th 1821, landing in Georgetown Harbor and living in the Charlottetown/Pownal up to the Survey of 1876. Due to the lack of record of Mackieson in the 1841 Census, we can only assume his permanent residence was in the Charlottetown area. It is possible even so that Mackieson did not marry or have children as no record of any Mackieson prior to or after his death sometime after the 1881 Census indicate any remaining family ancestors, unless they were born and had emigrated in the small window between 1881 and 1891.
