A collection of letters written by Georgina Fane Pope, a Canadian nurse who was the first of a team of four Canadian nurses to deploy in the inaugural British military contingent sailing for the South African (Boer) War late in 1899. The letters were written by Pope to her family while she was stationed in South Africa in 1900. The original letters are handwritten but a portion of them were transcribed by her brother's (Sir Joseph Pope) in Ottawa. This collection contains digital copies of the typed transcriptions where available, and, where not available, a digital copy of the original handwritten letter along with a 2023/2024 transcript created by historian Katherine Dewar and researcher Jane Dyment. This collection also includes a small selection of photographs taken by Pope during her time in South Africa which Katherine has connected to specific passages from the letters.
