The old community of Albertonpresents two prospects to the world.One faces outward across the wide bayon which the village sits, to the Gulf cf St.Lawrence. At its heart is the fishing villagethat has focused the community'sactivity since the early 1800s. The othervisage, Alberton proper, is a mile or soaway. The town is newer, more landcentred,and draws its life from the goodbroad farmlands that surround it.The fishing village on Cascumpec Bay,now called Northport, is by far the oldercf the two. In its time as a lumbering,shipbuilding, shipping, and fishing community,ithas seen more thanits share cftragedies. One of the most notable tookplace when the community was stillyoung. It concerns the burning cf a storebelongingto the powerfulmerchant-landlordJohn Hill. The event helped shapeAlberton's future.
