For 130 years, the tide of Europeanimmigration flowed into PrinceEdward Island. Beginning in 1720,French and Acadian settlers had come;afterwards, the British. Sometimes thetide was dammed by war or economicsor the politics of property. Sometimes itwas diverted by the lure of free land orready fortunes in other parts of the NewWorld. But always the tide continued toflow. Though a goodly portion wereEnglish, Scots — Highlanders mainly— comprised the lion's share of theimmigrants. At first, they came in discreetgroups,often under the patronageof aperson or group.
